It’ll Have to Do
Beth Welton © 2006

This old house could use a few new walls
And a roof and floor
It wouldn’t hurt to replace all the windows
And every other door
My grandpa built it with his own hands
Back in 1932
Now this is all that’s left
And it’ll have to do

This old car was a hotrod once
Though it’s hard to see
Because its only wide open spaces now
Are where the floor should be
My daddy bought it firsthand
Back in 1962
Now this is all that’s left
And it’ll have to do

This old dog used to shine
With canine possibility
She went through tennis balls
And kids and screens
With endless energy
But now she just sleeps all day long
And she sleeps all night, too
And this is all that’s left
And it’ll have to do

We can try with all our might
But we just keep getting older
And time it just keeps marching on
Like a deranged, drunken soldier
And still we hope, and still we dream
All our secret wishes fresh and green
Oh some things never change
Or so it seems

(Break, back to “we can try…”)

This old heart of mine’s been through the wringer
A time or two
It’s held together now with duct tape
And lots of crazy glue
Oh I wish you could have known me
Back when I was still brand new
Now this is all that’s left
And it’ll have to do
Yes I wish you could have known me
Back when I was still brand new
But this is all that’s left
And it’ll have to do.
